Shorinji Kempo is both a traditional art of budo and an excellent self defence. Shorinji Kempo offers a varied and many-sided training that can be practiced by everybody, boy or girl, young or old. Everybody is welcome.

There are three main goals of Shorinji Kempo practice. They are:

Goshin Rentan
Goshin Rentan (Self Defence)
Seishin Shuyo (Spiritual Cultivation)
Kenko Zoshin
Kenkō Zōshin (Physical health)

There are also two main purposes with practice:

Jiko Kakuritsu (Establishment of self)
Jita Kyōraku (Mutual happiness)

Through training one should build up oneself to a strong person, with a good sense of justice, that can help others. In order to describe Shorinji Kempo one usually talks about the six characteristics of Shorinji Kempo.

Shorinji Kempo was founded by So Doshin in 1947. He developed a system that builds on the techniques and the philosophy he learned in China. So Doshin wanted to re-create the thought of Boddhidharma when he taught martial art and Zen philosophy in the Shaolin temple. Shorinji Kempo is based on the unity of body and soul and the unity of strength and love.

The organisation is lead by the Shorinji Kempo hombu (headquarters), located in the small town Tadotsu in Japan, which also issues all grading certificates. All Shorinji Kempo branches in Sweden are affiliated to the Swedish Shorinji Kempo Federation and to the Swedish Budo and Martial arts Federation and the World Shorinji Kempo Oranization (WSKO).

Shorinji Kempo is also one of the nine gendai budō 現代武道 (modern budo*) that together with Nippon Budokan (日本武道館) forms the organisation Nippon Budō Kyōgikai 日本武道協議会. The nine gendai budō are: Aikido, Judo, Jukendo, Karate, Kendo, Kyudo, Naginata, Shorinji Kempo and Sumo.

* With modern, or gendai, budo we refer to budo that was established after 1868. Budo from the time before 1868 is usually called koryū budō 古流武道 or ”old-style” budo.
